Automobile Dealers

One out of every two Americans owns a car. For the approximately 1.8 million households in the United States, there are 1.9 million automobiles; a mere eight percent of households do not own cars. The United States is the largest market of automobile consumers in the world. It is safe to say that Americans love their cars. They like what they have now, they’re excited about upcoming models and they wait breathlessly for the cars of the future.

After a century of the automobile, nearly every aspect of American culture has been affected. There is little doubt that the automobile is here to stay.

It is the automobile dealer who recognizes this overwhelming passion for cars and is in the business of buying, selling or trading new or used motor vehicles.

An automobile dealer buys, sells, trades or arranges the purchase, sale or trade of vehicles, expecting some compensation or benefit. Salespersons employed by licensed dealers, and persons who sell cars which they bought and used as their personal vehicles, are not dealers.

A person who sells more than a specified number of vehicles (varies from state to state) within a calendar year must be licensed. Dealers are licensed by the state in which they do business. They must also comply with city zoning and business ordinances as well.
